Milk For Baby Krieg

Milk For Baby Krieg

Our Story:
My name is Shona Krieg and I am now a mommy and wife.
To me I now had my perfect family, almost. I had always wanted my number two. The second little love of my life that would complete this family perfectly. You know, two kids, house, white picket fence, the ideal life. But, as we all know, life is what happens in the midst of plans.

In October of 09 I had to go for emergency surgery due to appendicitis. It was then at thirty years old I realized I really need to take my health more seriously.  I decided it was time to follow up with my mammograms and women’s health. My mother had had double mastectomy breast cancer as well as ovarian cancer when I was growing up. So naturally I had to go every two years for check ups.
When I went in for my exam I was handed some very scary news when they told me they had found a lump and needed further testing. After needle aspirations and two lumpectomies I decided it was time to take some drastic measures to ensure my longevity if for no one else than my daughter who deserved a mother.
I was beginning to be gun shy after all every time I went for more testing they would find something. My mother then went for her genetic testing and found that she in fact had the mutated gene for breast and ovarian cancer. She herself was adopted so family history was hard to come by. Knowing this I went in for my own genetic testing which also proved to be positive.
I decided then to have both breasts removed rather than just the one.
Why wait for the other shoe to drop? I needed to be able to be a mother and wife, which meant, healthy and alive. It was just a matter of time, the doctors told me. I was happy to have been given the chance at a life still with the family we had.

My chances for my number two baby were dwindling. I mourned for the loss in my heart, thinking my body would be too weak after 6 surgeries and all the medication. My husband, being the wonderful partner he is, offered to get his surgery done which would end our chances of conceiving any more children.  He figured my body had been through enough. It was then we discovered that I was pregnant.

We of course have done everything to make sure this one is healthy and that my body was now strong enough. I have to tell you, I cried when the Doctors came and told me. I now had my number two. The perfect ending to my perfect family, and for my husband his shot at getting his baby boy. J
My daughter was so happy, as she has begged me for a brother or sister for years! We decided to let this one be our surprise in all shapes and form so we didn’t want to find out what gender until birth (Much to the dismay of our family!).
This baby has been so healthy! Heart beats strong, movement many! I often joke by saying this one will come out and immediately start running circles around me!
My midwives have been so good to us and on top of everything we could possibly need.

We only had one hurdle, breast feeding. Our daughter had been breast fed for 14 months and was the healthiest baby girl ever.  Caydence never got sick till she was over two years old and no antibiotics till then either. As far as the bonding went she has always been my cuddle bug. Quick with affection for her father and I, but also with others. I wanted the same opportunity with my new little one as well. With formulas being recalled left and right, as well as sensitivities to formula, I have been scared away from formula all together. Through the good graces of friends and close family I learned of milk sharing. I never even knew this was a possibility! It gave me hope that since I can't give our baby the best start in life, another mother would be willing to give our child the best chance at life with every ounce of shared Breast Milk.

I have been going strong and networking till all hours of the night trying to find whatever I can. I will do anything for my baby to have a great first start in life.
At this point we have little to no milk! It's been killing me inside and there is nothing I can do. I want to be a mother to our child and I feel less as a woman and a parent by not even being able to provide what should be natural for a mother ( Breast MILK )

What I am asking is that you read my story and if you are willing and able to help a mother that has had to face cancer with no hope to breast feed my own baby and find it in your heart to help us.
Please contact us.
My family would be so grateful for your kindness.
I am starting to get frantic at the thought that I can’t give my child the best chance at life. All I want is for our baby to have what every mother hopes to gain, a healthy, thriving infant nourished by mothers milk.  Words could never express the gift of life you would be providing to our baby.
You can find all my contact info listed on this page. Please feel free to contact me with any questions as I am more than happy to chat. Thank you all so much for your time and energy. ~ Bless you all, Shona Krieg

  1. Hi Shona, Thanks for sharing your story. I can't help you, but have you tried posting on the babycenter.com community discussion boards? Or search milk sharing there. Here's one that came up: http://community.babycenter.com/post/a30360045/milk_sharing

So many women have extra! Seems like you should be able to find it. Its probably just a matter of making the right connection. I will share your blog with friends.

    Good luck!

  2. There are several milk share groups on face book as well. I am passed my nursing years but I am so glad you discovered just the idea of milk sharing early enough to do something about it. I had no idea people did such a thing when my twins were born. I had a severe hemorrhage and my milk supply was almost non-existent. After years of infertility I was unable to nurse my miracle babies and was heart broken. When our surprise miracle baby showed up four years later I was able to nurse and donate milk as well. I hope and pray you find many donations.

  4. I don't live near your area, but I'm spreading the word on Facebook. I certainly hope you do have all your breastmilk needs fulfilled, but if you do not, or need a stand-by, please consider homemade formulas. I have supply issues and my son thrived on homemade formula. Here are a couple of links:

Again, I hope you get all the breastmilk your baby needs, but having these recipes and ingredients on hand can help you avoid using commercial formula should there be a lapse in breast milk coming your way.

    Yes, breast is best.

  5. Hi Shona! If you haven't already, check out http://www.eatsonfeets.org/ and http://www.hm4hb.net/ They are the best milk-sharing cites I know of. I was the recipient of donor milk from a friend and blogged extensively about milk sharing. Through these two organizations, I have been able to hook other mamas up with milk. If you join their groups on facebook, you can (most likely) have a freezer full of milk for as long as you need. Ideally (and this doesn't HAVE to be the case, but it's best) you want to find mothers who are birthing around the same general time as your little babe, so they can get the colostrum and things that they need, as well as age appropriate milk. But honestly, ANY mama milk is pure liquid gold and your little one can really benefit from it.

I have several friends who have donated and receieved milk, and if you ever need advice or just to vent, feel free to get in touch with me, or I can get you in touch with other mamas too. Whatever you do, go to Eats on Feets or HM4HB at the links above. They are great organizations.
